V - . The absence of a Confederate monument in this city is bne most noticeable to the visitors, here. All the small townls ' in Eastern North Carolina have erect monui ments to perpeterate the memory of the 'Lost Cause," namely, Hert ford, Edenton, Columbia, Plymouth, Windsor ac. It was unamiously ordered that a re quest be made of the papers of this city to invite all ladies wnose fathers, husbands, son, brother or uncle were faithful soilders in the Confederate armies at the close of the war to assemble in the court house on Tuesday next, April 20th at :30 o'clock p. m. in conjunction with this camp to formulate and put into immediate action all suggestions etc., that may be adopted after due consideration and deliberation by its friends and members. Last Friday - clerk of the. Federal Court, T.J. Markham was advised by. the Department of Commerce and Labor that the legal proceedings ajgainst the LeRoy Sfteamboat Co., had been settled by the Depart ment. The LeRoy steamboat Company was fined $200 on one charge. He, so he says, was a soldier in the Seminole Indian war in Florida, way back in the early year of the eigh teen hundreds. He has been thrust through with a sword, had great gashes cut on his person with bay onets and knifes and has been rid dled more times than once with bullets. He says that doctors have stated to him that he has been the worse cut up and shot up man that they had ever seen. He is now making his home near the cotton mills in this city. The project to build this railway is ?aecde by all to he a practical business' proposition and a paying investment to the capitaalists. As. a means of the developing the lower section of the County, it is one of the greatest proposition ever pre- sented to the people. . There is not a particle of doubt about the road being imilt sooner or later, but those particularly inter-r ested in the means of transportation from this city to the lower part of the County is particularly anxious that the road shall be built at. the earliest possible moment. Several of the most successful business men in this city have become ' especially in terested in the movement to build the road and are going to give their time, efforts and means to see the movement materalize. These gentlemen are anxious Jto have the hearty co-operation pf bus iness men and farmers.
